By James Mwambai,
13th June 2014, (PSCU)-The National
soccer team – Harambee Stars – will travel to Brazil to watch the World
Cup, thanks to President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret
Kenyatta’s sponsorship.
Handing over
the sponsorship of over Ksh 10.4 million at State House Nairobi today,
President Kenyatta expressed optimism that the support to the national
soccer team would encourage and inspire it to improve performance.
In sponsoring
the team to Brazil, President Kenyatta fulfilled the pledge he made a
few months ago when the team won the CECAFA Challenge Cup.
“I made a
personal pledge that I and my wife Margaret, would sponsor our team to
Brazil to give them the opportunity to watch the world cup as a way of
encouraging and inspiring,” said the President.
The President
underscored the Jubilee Governments’ commitment to supporting sports as
one way of promoting the talents of the youth.
He disclosed
that the Government would soon launch the National Lottery Sports Fund
which will continuously support sports in the country.
“We are in the
process of looking at different modalities to see how we can nurture our
soccer team and other sports activities in the country,” President
Kenyatta said.
He expressed
his gratitude to the East African Breweries Company for their
contribution of over Ksh 3.4 million in sponsorship of the national
soccer team.
The President took the opportunity to caution Kenyans to be alert and security-conscious as they watch the World Cup matches.
Harambee Stars
team captain Jerry Onyango thanked the President and the First Lady for
their kind gesture, saying it has fulfilled their dream as a team.
“We thank the
Government for the undying support it has been giving us. Through that
support, the team managed to win the CECAFA and also made major progress
during the Africa Cup qualifier,” Onyango said.
